Archaeological research indicates that the site has been inhabited since ancient times. According to the construction style, the church itself dates back to a period from the 11th to the 13th centuries, which makes it one of the oldest in this area. Unfortunately, there are no written documents to confirm the construction date. Some sources indicate that in 1472, Prince Ivan VII Frankopan surrendered the church and the surrounding estate to the Vrbnik people, and according to some chroniclers, this was the parish church in the time before the present-day Vrbnik settlement. There is a panoramic view over Vrbnik and the Velebit Channel from this site, on a hill to the south of the town.
