This church is located on the highest part of Vrbnik and was first mentioned in 1325 in the Statute of the Fraternity of St. John the Baptist. It obtained its current appearance from remodelling carried out in the late Middle and Early Modern Ages. There is no physical evidence of the original church located here, and the most important source of the previous appearance is the description of the apostolic visitor Agostin Valier from 1579.
The church's interior is dominated by a marble altar by the sculptor, Ivan Rendić together with the magnificent gilded wooden altarpiece from the 16th century whose central image shows Mary's ascension to heaven. In the oldest part of the church is the Gothic chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary, erected by order of Ivan VII Frankopan. Its altar is decorated with a wooden piece that was acquired in 1477 in Venice.
Along the west side of the church is a bell tower that, since its construction in 1527, has dominated the Vrbnik view.
