Vela placa in the town of Krk

Vela placa in the town of Krk

The main square of Krk, Vela placa or Platea magna, was first mentioned in 1263. In the Middle Ages, it hosted a town hall and a courtroom, and during the Renaissance, it was a place for trade. The recognisable ornaments of the Vela placa are a square tower (Torrion) from the 15th century and a 16th century six-sided well. Below the square is a valuable archaeological site with the oldest part of the town walls dating back to the 4th and 3th centuries BC. The square represents the inscription Splendidissima civitatis Curictarum (The Shining Town of Krk), which is the first written evidence of the town of Krk’s existence, found on an ancient tombstone from the 4th century.
