Impressive stone “flowers”

Mrgari are dry stonewall buildings intended for the occasional collection and sorting of sheep. They consist of a common central space – a hall, and a small flower petal like mrgarić that is individually owned by each shepherd. They were necessary to enable shepherds to herd their sheep from the pasture towards the funnel-shaped entrance of the mrgar. Once the sheep were herded into the hallway, the entrance would be closed and each shepherd would separate his sheep and close them in his mrgarić. After work in the mrgarić was finished (checking the health of the flock, shearing them or other sheep handling techniques), the shepherd would let them out through the outer hole of the mrgarić back to the pasture. These stone “flowers” are unique and can only be found in the southern part of the island of Krk. They were only built by a few shepherds from the Baška Valley. Shepherds from Baška, Batomalj and Jurandvor deserve praise for this rhapsody in stone, while those from Draga Bašćanska did not use this way of sheep breeding. There are ten mrgars, five on each plateau, and another five on the neighbouring island of Prvić used as pasture by the afore-mentioned shepherds.
